Letter from the President: End of Year Review

Sunday, June 27, 2010

First, this year has been a pleasure working and sweating it out with you all on the pitch besides you.  So for that, thank you.  I am honored to serve as your President and Captain.

Also, I would like to formally thank our coach, Randy Anderson.  His passion and love for the game has inspired us to success.  Simply put, our team would not be the same without him.  Please thank him personally as he will be returning as our Head Coach this upcoming season.

This fall, we broke a number of records.  With a record of 8-2-2, we finished second in the Eastern Division.   We were tied for 5th in the Power Ranking for the 40+ MASC conference.  And most importantly of all, we qualified for the regional tournament.  Unfortunately, and due to no fault of our own, the tournament was canceled and we narrowly missed nationals.  That won't happen again.

This winter, we played indoor at TriCounty Sportsplex for both winter sessions.  Besides winning two of the three leagues, at one point we were winning against a semi-professional indoor team.   Great stuff boys.

This spring, we tried something else new.  We played in the GCASL.  And we were damn good.  With a record of 7-1, we won the league.  If you happen to be on campus sometime soon, stop by the SALD office on the 4th floor of Steger.  Our trophy is proudly displayed amoung all club sports.  We even competited in the adidas Warrior Soccer Classic.  We were definitely on of the best teams in the field, alas, the best team doesn't alway win in soccer and thats the beauty of the sport.

We won some other awards this year, too.  We were named the Team Sport of the Year by the Club Sports Board.  Also, Randy Anderson was recognized as the Coach of the Year.  Legit.

After our last match last Friday, we recognized some players for their contributions to the club, as well.

Defensive Player of the Year: Gary Henderson
Offensive Player of the Year: Jake McDonald
Goal of the Year: Joey Sandmann, Ball State bicycle kick
Most Valuable Player: Alan Hagerty

Looking to the future, we will have pick up practices this summer.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Tryouts are scheduled for September 7th, 8th, and 9th at 6 PM on Gettler.   Spread the word!  Our goals are to beat Ohio State, win the Eastern Division, top the MASC Power Ranking, and become national champs.  Sounds simple enough, eh?

Cheers,
Alan Hagerty
UC Club Soccer President
